It's Better to Give

One of Jesus' sayings that he passed on to his followers is that it is better to give than to receive. The Bible repeatedly connects generosity to joy, abundant life, and belief in the gospel. As such, we want to take a journey of discovering what Jesus and the Scriptures have to say about generosity and the life that is truly life.

Rest assured, there is no ask associated with this study or instructions for directive giving. Rather, this study is rooted in a desire to trust more fully what God says about generosity and experience the joy that comes with generosity.

Deacon Process Document

As God’s people we live in response to who God is and what He has done in the person and work of Jesus. Jesus is the Apostle who plants a church (Heb. 3:1). Jesus is the head of the church (Eph. 1:9, 1:22–23, 4:15, 5:23) and He is the Senior Pastor who builds the church (Matthew 16:18). The elders/pastors of Soma SRV are stewards working under Jesus’ headship and authority to serve His Bride. Deacons are tasked with serving the elders and church.

The Scriptures teach that the church and the elders are to be served by qualified deacons. Deacons are to be tested for a season related to their character, competence, and capacity to serve as a deacon (I Tim 3:8-11). Upon proving qualification, deacons are tasked with serving the elders in doing justice and in leading volunteer teams in areas that impact the entire church (e.g. gatherings, events, hospitality, financial systems, etc). Churches that are able to contend for the scriptural parameters of Deaconship and contextualize for the practical issues that arise in a given context will effectively lead their church to greater fruitfulness.

Elder Process Document

As God’s people we live in response to who God is and what He has done in the person and work of Jesus. Jesus is the Apostle who plants a church (Heb. 3:1). Jesus is the Head of the church (Eph. 1:9, 1:22–23, 4:15, 5:23) and He is the Senior Pastor who builds the church (Matthew 16:18). The elders/pastors of Soma SRV are shepherds working under Jesus’ headship and authority to serve His Bride.

The Scriptures teach that the church is to be led by a plurality of qualified male-elders who lead the church by example and in humble service. Qualification involves examining the character, teaching competency, and capacity of a man (I Tim 3:2, Titus 1:5-7). Elders are to shepherd from amongst the flock, with right motives and as examples to the church. At Soma SRV it is our conviction that churches be elder-led, with staff that equip the entire Body to live all of life as ministers of the Gospel.

DNA GUIDE

A DNA Group usually consists of three people—men with men, women with women—who help one another to discover Jesus in the Scriptures, nurture the truths of the gospel in their hearts, and take action to obey what Jesus calls them to. These groups are a safe place to share both our struggles and our hopes, and receive the help that we need to become more like Jesus.
