WHO WE ARE

OUR VISION

Soma Family of Churches Vision Video

We are a family of servant missionaries who make disciples who make disciples for the glory of God and the good of the East Bay. Although often hidden, the needs of our community are immense and few people know the life-changing power of Jesus. We want to see that change.

We are convinced that the primary means through which God will bring about healing in our community and draw people to Himself is the Church. Not a building, an institution, or a program, but everyday people who are seeking to make Jesus known in all of life. As the church, we gather in Danville and scatter throughout the week in missional communities who seek to make Jesus known in all of life.

This vision can't happen alone, but must take place in the context of deep partnership with other churches. We are currently supporting two church planting residents, partnering with several churches in the Bay Area, and helping to plant Citizens Church in San Francisco.

Our Beliefs

Our Beliefs

GOSPEL

Jesus for us

“Gospel” simply means “good news” and is the pronouncement concerning the person and work of Jesus Christ. The good news is about Jesus: that he is God who became a man and lived a perfect life of love. Jesus died the death we should have died, as our substitute. Jesus rose from the dead, conquering sin and its effects. He thereby proved that he was an acceptable sacrifice upholding God’s justice, defeating sin and death for all those who would believe. The fruition of this good news is in God making all things new: complete restoration, peace, joy, and justice forever. The gospel demonstrates that we are all deeply loved by God and that truth changes everything. Personally. Globally. Eternally.

COMMUNITY

Jesus with us

The gospel has created a new people that live as a family of servant missionaries who make disciples that make disciples in the flow of everyday life. In the gospel, we now have the resource to live together, forgive one another, and seek the good of the East Bay. Our shared life together happens in a variety of spaces and times, and reveals things about God that we could never discover in isolation. We pursue deep community where people live life with each other:  sharing meals, meeting needs, hanging out, mourning, and celebrating together.

MISSION

Jesus through us

The gospel is to be declared and demonstrated in tangible, obvious ways by those who are following Jesus.  God has called us to be actively involved in His ongoing work in this world and we embrace this reality as a practice of our life. Missional Communities live out the mission of God together by sharing the gospel with others and serving the needs of the East Bay together. Each missional community is regularly and relationally stepping into their mission to care for those in need and to make disciples. Practically, this looks like ordinary people living with gospel intentionality in the everyday stuff of life.

SOMA DISTINCTIVES

Soma Community Church is a part of the Soma Family of Churches that shares common convictions. We are unified around our theology and understanding of the church, and diverse in the way we live it out in our contexts. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with these distinctives as they shape our church. We are a Bible believing community that ascribes to creeds of the early church and the confessional statement of the Gospel Coalition.

Ben Joyce - Minister of Vision/Teaching Ben planted this church in 2012. He loves helping people discover the good news of Jesus and take their next steps in following him. You'll probably find him covered in dirt and saw dust as he learns a new hobby or makes repairs on his old home in Walnut Creek, where he lives with his wife Becky and three kids.
